There are studies showing positive correlation between person’s healthy smile and person’s quality of life. Dentists – they are the ones in charge of giving us this healthy smile. Dentistry is the science of evaluating, diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases and any disorders related to oral cavity and function and how it relates to the overall health of an individual. Good oral health is widely considered essential in achieving overall health. So, beyond the teeth, dentists treat oral conditions that affect patient’s tongue, jaw, gums, and lips.
Majority of graduates go for private practice by having their own dental clinic. About 20% go for employment in hospitals as specialists in related areas, such as orthodontics, endodontics, maxillofacial surgery, cosmetic dentistry, dental anaesthesiology, pediatric dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, and others. There are those who go for forensic dentistry, which is a specialty focusing on legal matters. This field is well-known in criminal investigations and is used in identifying human remains based on dental records, identifying who committed the crime given bite mark as evidence, etc. Some become part of academic and research aspect of Dentistry. Pediatric dentists, on the other hand, are focused on taking care of oral health of children from infancy to their teenage years. Patients of this age range are often uncooperative during dental procedures, and pediatric dentists know how to handle such cases. They also use dental equipment designed specifically for these patients. There is also a field of Dentistry specializing in dental needs of animals – veterinary dentistry. One can also go for public dental health involvement, where dentists promote awareness about oral health in a society through some organized mission groups.
Regardless of specialization or choice of career line, a Dentistry graduate cannot practice dentistry without passing certification or licensure exam for dentistry. Just like other fields of medicine, dentistry should be done with utmost care since this concerns patient’s health. This is why license becomes a requirement. Malpractice may lead to revoking of license that would prevent a dentist from practicing the profession.
Dentistry requires high level of precision and good hand-eye coordination along with strong understanding of pathology and biology of concerning region of the body. This is typically a 4-year or a 5-year program. Since Dentistry is about one-on-one interaction with patient, the program also prepares the students on how to effectively handle patients, especially because patients often fear dental procedures.
With the advances of technology in Dentistry augmented with the increasing level of vanity of mankind, dentistry, nowadays, deals with more than fixing problems in oral cavity region – rather, this field is known to “beautify” people. Specifically, cosmetic dentistry and aesthetic dentistry are the specialties responsible for this. While most people see these fields as basically the same, there are actually differences between the two. Aesthetic dentistry focuses mainly on tooth implants or the technology of filling in the space due to missing tooth. With that said, aesthetic dentistry is the field responsible for creating dentures, bridges, dental crowns, and tooth implants. Cosmetic dentistry, on the other hand, is 100% cosmetic in function. Cosmetic dentist is where you go when you want your yellowish teeth become stunning white, when you want misaligned teeth to come as perfect as it can be through braces and retainers, and other dental cosmetic techniques that would give beauty to a person’s smile. Having incomplete or misaligned teeth cannot kill a person, and this is why aesthetic dentistry is regarded as “for vanity.” However, it is difficult to eat and to speak clearly with incomplete or misaligned teeth. It also makes a person uncomfortable smiling - leading to lower self-confidence, and thus, affecting quality of the person’s social life. With these, aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry may or may not necessarily mean a need. For those who have career requiring clear speaking ability and for those who have career requiring high interaction with people, it is a must.
