Dentistry Education in Singapore

Dentistry education is a very important field of study on the island of Singapore, and is offered by the National University of Singapore (NUS) at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  At NUS, the curriculum in the dentistry program is designed to provide superior training for a dental graduate to practice sound general dentistry and to instill a commitment to learning throughout the graduate’s professional life.  According to the university’s website, the objectives of the program, or what the graduate should possess upon completion of his/her degree, are as follows:
  • A thorough understanding of the biological sciences, and the ability to integrate and correlate these basic sciences within a clinical dental practice.
  • Competence in diagnosis of oral and dental diseases, including an understanding of the relationship between general and oral diseases.
  • Skills to provide preventive and treatment services commonly required in dental practice.
  • The ability to organize and administer a dental practice efficiently.
  • The skills to appraise and apply research findings and new technology in a dental setting.
  • A commitment towards continuing education.
  • A sense of professional, ethical and social responsibility.
The curriculum of the dentistry program is competency-based, with an emphasis on imparting skills that are essential to the practice of dentistry.  The classroom environment is highly didactic, enabling students to be fully engaged while learning the relevant knowledge and skills necessary to becoming a skilled dental practitioner.

Why Study Abroad in Singapore

The city-island-state of Singapore was founded in 1819, although it wasn’t until 1959 that the country achieved its independence from the United Kingdom and installed its first fully elected Legislative assembly.  Since that time, the country has become an economic powerhouse in the region with a high standard of living and several reasons to visit, including:

The Food

Students rave about the food when studying in Singapore; a cuisine that is influenced primarily by the Chinese, but also by the Malays and Indians, and a smattering of Western influence as well.  Some of these delicious treats include nasi lemak, a Malaysian dish of coconut rise, anchovies, cucumber, and chili paste; bak kut the, a clear Chinese soup cooked with pork ribs and five spices; roti prata, an Indian flatbread served with lentil curry; and British crumpets, which go perfect with that afternoon cup of tea.

The Shopping

Although Singapore is known as a land of holy temples, it is also home to an abundance of shopping malls and brand name merchandise.  On the main island, for example, on the corner of Orchard Road and Scotts Road, there are several air-conditioned retail arcades where you’ll find luxury goods at a more-than-fair price.  Antiques are available at the Tanglin Shopping Center in town, while art and furniture can be purchased at the warehouses on Dempsey Road.

The Sights

Sightseeing opportunities are limitless on the beautiful island of Singapore and tourism is one of the country’s largest industries.  The city boasts a number of plush resorts at spas, such as Sentosa, a resort island with its own beaches, nature preserves, hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and golf courses.  The trip to Sentosa is also enjoyable—a suspended cable car that launches from the main island.  Singapore is also the home of Night Safari, a wildlife complex where the animals are at their busiest after dark.  Guests ride in a tram at a safe distance, but close enough to see the behaviors and mannerisms of a number of very rare species.  And finally, history buffs will enjoy the Singapore History Museum, a renovated 120-year old building featuring multimedia history exhibits and interactive displays showcasing some of the many highlights of the island’s past.
