Dentistry Studies in Sweden

Are you a student who is considering dentistry as a field of study and possible career?  Have you always wanted to study and live for a time in another country?  If so, now you can have the best of both worlds by enrolling in one of the many study abroad dentistry programs in the beautiful country of Sweden—a country renowned for its advanced educational programs in the medical and dental sciences.

Officially known as the Kingdom of Switzerland, Switzerland is a Scandinavian country located in the northern or Norse portion of the European Continent.  The country is bordered by Norway and Finland, and is connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Øresund.  Occupying a geographic region of 173,860 square miles (450, 295 sq. km), Sweden is the third-largest country in the European Union by total area, but with a population of just under 10 million, the country has a very low population density—about 54 inhabitants per square mile (54/sq. km), most of whom are concentrated in the southern half of the country, mostly in the country’s urban areas.  The capital and largest city of Sweden is Stockholm.

Considered a wealthy and very modern country, Sweden has the world’s eighth-highest per capita income, and is currently ranked second in the world on the Democracy Index.  Part of its success as a major economic force in the world can be attributed to the country’s excellent system of higher education, considered a model system, not just in Europe but around the world.

Dentistry Education in Sweden

As it is with most developed countries in the world, students in Sweden who are pursuing either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.D.M.) degree learn advanced techniques geared towards providing dental care to patients in the future, diagnosing and treating oral conditions and mastering dental treatment procedures.  Some of the advanced topics involved in this type of degree include restorative dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, and general and local anesthesia.

Beyond the baccalaureate or Bachelor degree, usually in a science related field, dental school in Sweden generally takes four years of study to complete.  Completion of certain classes is required to gain entry into a dental school; however some schools offer a combination or integration program that allows students to earn their bachelor or master’s degree while working toward their doctorate in the dental sciences.  Students are also required to take and pass the national Dental Admissions Test.

While working towards their D.D.S. or D.D.M. degree, students take a variety of clinical and biological science classes, including:
  • Dentistry biostatistics
  • Molecular biology
  • Oral microbiology
  • Head and neck anatomy
  • Dental radiography
  • Occlusion
  • Operativ e dentistry
During the final years of these degree programs, students participate in guided practice—clinical rotations in which they work with real patients under the supervision of clinical instructors.  Off-campus experience is often received through internships, which all students must participate in prior to taking the licensing exam that will allow them to practice dentistry in Swedish clinics.

Why Study Abroad in Sweden

Studying abroad is a big step, but it’s something that every student should take advantage of if given the opportunity.  Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to broaden their cultural and professional horizons, gain a new perspective on academics and society, and make new friends with other like-minded people from around the world.

Unlike most countries in the world, Swedish universities have a very open climate, with a strong focus on group work and team cooperation.  This style of learning will help you build valuable skills that will continue to benefit you throughout your professional career.

The Dental degree programs in Sweden offer unique opportunities to turn theory into practice.  Many of these programs work hand-in-hand with real-world dental clinics, offering students the chance to mix their studies with practical work.  This style of learning gives students a distinct advantage when entering the job market, making them much more marketable than graduates of other dental programs.

Sweden currently has three universities ranked among the Top 100 Universities in the World, and eleven universities in the Top 500, according to the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities.

This long list of inventions can be attributed to a storied history of excellence in academia and research—a history which you too could be a part of when choosing Sweden as your study abroad destination.
