The UAE has a diversified higher education system, which comprises of government, as well as, private institutions. UAE citizens can attend government higher education institutions free of charge. The country has one of the highest participation rates at tertiary education in the world. 80 percent of males and 95 percent females, who complete their secondary school, enroll into a higher education program in UAE.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research regulates higher education in UAE. English is the main language of instruction at universities and colleges in UAE. However, students are expected to have fluency in Arabic as well. Higher education system in UAE comprises three levels- undergraduate course, graduate course and PhD programs.

First Level- Bachelor’s Programs in the UAE

Colleges and universities in UAE offer undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs in a wide range of disciplines, including, Business administration, arts, pure sciences, and computer science. Professional higher education in the fields of engineering, law and medical science is also offered in UAE universities.

Holders of Secondary school Leaving certificate or candidates with equivalent qualification can get admission in a bachelor’s degree program in UAE. The duration of an under graduation program is three to four years. Tourism, psychology, accounting, business management, fashion designing, human resource management and hospitality management are some of the popular bachelor’s degree courses offered by universities in UAE.

Under graduate courses in the field of engineering are one of the most sought after professional higher education options in UAE. Petroleum engineering, architecture engineering and civil engineering are some of the programs that offer excellent employment opportunities. The bachelor’s programs in the engineering field typically last for four years.

Second Level- Master’s Programs in the UAE

Programs for a master’s degree in UAE are open to students who hold a bachelor degree from an accredited institution recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The GPA scored in an under graduate program is usually considered for admission by most colleges and universities in UAE. Master of education, business administration, engineering, environment science, law and medicine are some of the courses available in the country. A full time master’s degree program typically takes two years to complete, while part time programs take three years. The academic year for graduation studies runs from August to June.

Most graduate programs are offered in English. However, master’s degree programs in Arabic and Islamic studies are offered in Arabic and English.

Some master’s degree programs require an independent research project, a seminar or an internship as part of the curriculum. Successful completion of the course duration and requirement leads to the conferment of the master’s degree.

Third Level- Doctorate Programs in the UAE

Those who have obtained a master’s degree qualify to pursue a doctorate in their respective fields.  The first PhD program was announced by the United Arab Emirates University in the year 2009. PhD programs involve one year full time study, followed by research and dissertation for other two or three years.
