About Lleida
Lleida is the capital of the province of the same name, in the west of Catalonia, and had 147,369 inhabitants in 2025 according to Idescat, the Catalan statistics institute, based on the INE annual population census. The Universitat de Lleida describes it as the most important demographic and economic centre of inland Catalonia. The city is built around the hill of the Seu Vella, the old cathedral, on the right bank of the river Segre, about 150 km from Barcelona and 140 km from Zaragoza.
For students, Lleida is a mid-sized university city: large enough for a full range of services, small enough to cross by bus or bicycle. It suits students who want a public university with a long history, a lower-key alternative to Barcelona, and easy access to the Pyrenees for weekends.
Studying in Lleida
Our directory lists two active schools in Lleida: one university and one language school. The Universitat de Lleida (UdL) traces its origins to the Estudi General, created on 1 September 1300 by King James II after a papal bull of 1 April 1297 had approved a university in the lands of the Crown of Aragon. The Estudi General was closed in 1717, after 417 years, and the present university was created by a law of the Catalan Parliament on 12 December 1991. In the 2025-26 academic year the UdL offers 50 bachelor's degrees (including 15 double degrees) and 32 officially recognised master's degrees at its own centres, with 9,552 bachelor's students. According to the university, it has a strong position in agricultural and forestry studies, and it also teaches arts and humanities, sciences, health sciences, social sciences and law, and engineering and architecture. Education, medicine, nursing, engineering, economics, law, sport science, tourism and social work are among the subjects in our Lleida listing.
Catalan and Spanish are both official in Catalonia, and the UdL encourages new students to start learning Catalan before they arrive, so check the language of each course before you enrol. Students from outside the Catalan-speaking area can take an introductory Catalan A1 course at the UdL Institut de Llengües: the intensive version lasts 35 hours and runs from 31 August to 10 September 2026, and costs €29.15 for UdL bachelor's and master's students or €11.55 for Erasmus, SICUE and UdL mobility students who pre-register by 30 July.

The city also has its own airport, Lleida-Alguaire.
