Language Immersion Courses in Guatemala

Guatemala has a long tradition of Spanish language schools for foreigners. Most of them are small private schools that teach one-to-one, place students with local families and add cultural activities, excursions and often volunteer work. Courses are sold by the week, so you can come for a short stay or for several months.

The schools are concentrated in two highland cities. Quetzaltenango, also called Xela, is Guatemala's second city and has four of the seven language schools in our directory; Antigua Guatemala, a colonial town near the capital, has two, and nearby Ciudad Vieja one.

How Spanish courses work in Guatemala

• One-to-one classes: the standard format, with one teacher per student, often 4 to 5 hours a day; Miguel Angel Asturias Spanish School in Xela, for example, offers 25 hours of private classes a week
• Group classes: offered by some schools, such as the Tecún Umán Spanish School in Antigua (founded in 1983)
• Specialised Spanish: medical, business or professional Spanish, sometimes combined with volunteering in clinics or community projects
• Exam preparation: courses for the DELE and SIELE exams
• Online classes: many schools also teach online

Start dates are flexible. At Ciudad Vieja Spanish Academy classes begin every Monday, and at Sol Latino, in the historic centre of Quetzaltenango, the school has developed 10 course levels. El Quetzal Spanish School, founded in 1998, is a family-run school in Xela, and COINED Antigua belongs to an international network of Spanish schools.

Quality and certificates

Schools differ in the recognition they can show, so check it before you book. The international reference is the Instituto Cervantes accreditation (SACIC): accredited centres go through a full evaluation that is repeated every three years. Celas Maya in Quetzaltenango states that it is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, is an official DELE and SIELE exam centre and has taught Spanish since 1999; it also offers courses in Mayan languages. Other schools cite national recognition: Tecún Umán and Miguel Angel Asturias, for example, say they are recognised by the Ministry of Education (Mineduc) and the tourism institute INGUAT.

A school certificate shows your attendance and level; an official exam proves your level to others. The DELE diplomas are official titles awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. They cover all CEFR levels from A1 to C2, never expire and do not require a previous course. Ciudad Vieja Spanish Academy, Sol Latino and Celas Maya, among others, offer DELE preparation.

If you need academic credit, ask your home university first. Some schools work with partner universities: Tecún Umán grants credits through the Universidad Rural de Guatemala, and Celas Maya is registered with the University of Westminster for credit programmes.

Admission and visas

Language schools have no entry requirements: you book a start date, take a placement test and start at your level. Many students come on a tourist stay. Citizens of countries that need a visa in advance (category C countries for the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración, IGM) must apply for a tourist visa, with a $25 application fee. A tourist who wants to stay longer can apply for an extension ($25), which must be requested before the authorised stay expires.

For longer studies at a Guatemalan educational institution, the IGM grants a temporary residence for students, with a fee of $100 for each year granted (checked October 2026). IGM fees are set in US dollars and paid in quetzales at the official exchange rate.

At Miguel Angel Asturias, volunteering has no additional cost; at Sol Latino part of the weekly fee goes to local social organisations.
