Business management is the study of how organisations are run: how they set goals, organise people and money, sell their products and adapt to change. It is one of the broadest subjects in higher education, and it suits students who want a general grounding before choosing a specialism. Graduates are found in companies of every size, in the public sector and in their own start-ups.

The core is similar almost everywhere. The Universidad de Navarra describes its business degree as complete training in finance, marketing, operations, people management and general management. Around that core, schools add economics, accounting, business law, data analysis and entrepreneurship, and most programmes include projects with companies, a work placement or an internship.

Qualifications and levels

  • Vocational training: in Spain, the higher vocational qualification Técnico Superior en Administración y Finanzas takes 2,000 hours and is open to holders of the Bachiller, among other routes. In the United States, community colleges offer two-year associate degrees; Northeast Community College in Nebraska, for example, has an Associate of Applied Science in Business with a required cooperative internship, and a shorter diploma.
  • Bachelor's degree: Spanish bachelor's degrees (grados) have 240 ECTS credits and take four years. The usual title is Administración y Dirección de Empresas (ADE). In the United Kingdom a BA (Hons) in Business Management normally takes three years full time, or four with a placement year, as at York St John University.
  • Master's degree and MBA: Spanish master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits under Royal Decree 822/2021. MBA programmes are aimed at graduates and often at people with work experience: ESEI International Business School in Barcelona asks for a bachelor's degree or more than five years of experience for its MBA of 90 or 120 ECTS.
  • Short courses: summer schools and study abroad programmes give a first taste of the subject without a full degree.

Where to study it

SpainExchange lists 109 active schools for business management. Most are in Spain (35), the United States (32) and the United Kingdom (12), followed by France and India with three each.

In Spain, the Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresas at the Universidad de Navarra is an official degree of 240 credits, taught in Spanish and English in Pamplona, with 230 places. ESEI International Business School in Barcelona teaches a three-year Bachelor in Business Management entirely in English, with intakes in October and February and a high school diploma as the entry requirement. Students spend the first two years in Barcelona and complete the final year with a UK university; according to the school, they graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Business Management awarded by Anglia Ruskin University or The University of Law Business School. With private business schools, ask what recognition the qualification has in the country where you plan to work or continue studying.

In the United Kingdom, York St John University asks for 104 UCAS Tariff points, and students whose first language is not English need IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5, or equivalent. Its published tuition fee for 2026 entry is £9,790 per year for UK students and £12,100 per year for international students. London Metropolitan University teaches its Business Management BA (Hons) at its Holloway campus and asks for a minimum of grades CCC at A level or 96 UCAS points. International applicants for full-time study can apply through UCAS or directly to the university.

In the United States, the listed schools range from research universities to community colleges. According to EducationUSA, students can earn a bachelor's degree with two years at a community college followed by two years at a university, which usually lowers the overall cost.

Careers

Business management graduates start in roles such as management trainee, analyst, sales or marketing executive, human resources officer or operations coordinator, and move into management with experience. Others take over a family firm or start their own company.

For the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that overall employment in management occupations will grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035, with about 1.1 million openings each year. Employment of top executives is projected to grow 5 percent over the same period, with about 304,100 openings a year. The same source notes that top executives typically need at least a bachelor's degree and considerable work experience, so senior posts come later in a career.
