Studies & Degrees in Digital Marketing
Digital Marketing Study Programs
Digital marketing is the part of marketing that reaches customers through online channels: search engines, social networks, websites, online shops, email and paid digital advertising. Students learn to plan a campaign, bring visitors to a site, turn them into customers and measure each step with data. The field mixes business, communication and technology, and it changes quickly; current programmes already include artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
It can be studied as a full degree, as a specialisation within a marketing or business degree, or as a postgraduate or short course.
What students learn
The core topics are similar from school to school. Manchester Metropolitan University describes its BSc (Hons) Digital Marketing as giving hands-on skills in SEO, social media, content, analytics and campaign strategy. The master's at EAE Business School in Madrid covers SEO and SEM positioning, digital analytics, e-commerce and performance marketing.
- Search engine optimisation (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM)
- Paid advertising on platforms such as Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads and LinkedIn Ads, and programmatic advertising
- Social media, content and brand strategy
- Web analytics, consumer behaviour and market research
- E-commerce, customer relationship tools and marketing automation
- AI applied to content, advertising and search
Qualifications and levels
- Bachelor's degree: at Manchester Metropolitan University the BSc is organised in three years; the university explains that a three-year degree typically has 360 UK credits, 120 per year. The first year covers the fundamentals of digital and AI marketing and of analytics, and the third year ends with a final project. The typical offer is 120-128 UCAS tariff points, with IELTS 6.0 overall for international students.
- Vocational training in Spain: the higher-level cycle Técnico Superior en Marketing y Publicidad (2,000 hours) includes a digital marketing module, according to TodoFP, the vocational training portal of the Spanish Ministry of Education.
- Master's degree: this is the most common format in Spain, usually one academic year. The EAE master's in Madrid has 60 ECTS credits and lasts 10 months full-time, in Spanish and English. The online master's in digital marketing and generative AI at Inesdi Business Techschool also lasts 10 months and has 60 ECTS; Inesdi gives a price of €7,500 for the intake of September 2027.
- Type of qualification: in Spain, an official master's degree (máster universitario) has 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits, and a university's own master's is called Máster de Formación Permanente. EAE lists its Madrid master's as an own qualification (EAE and the Universidad Internacional de la Empresa). EUDE Business School states that its online programme leads to two diplomas: an official one issued by Universidad EUDE México through Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) and an additional European qualification of its own. Ask each school which diploma you receive and what recognition it has in your country.
- Admission: master's programmes ask for a university degree. EAE prefers a background in economics and business, marketing or communication, and its students have two years of work experience on average.
Where to study digital marketing
SpainExchange lists 20 schools for this subject: 13 in Spain, 4 in the United States and one each in Singapore, Germany and the United Kingdom. In Spain, most are business schools in Madrid and Barcelona, such as ESDEN Business School, EUDE and IE Business School in Madrid, and EAE Business School, Inesdi Business Techschool, LCI Barcelona and C3S Business School in Barcelona. The list also includes universities, among them the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Elche and the Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes in Valladolid. Abroad, there are Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, Arcadia University and Ashland University in the United States and the Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft (FHDW) in Paderborn, Germany.
Many programmes are taught online, so the school does not have to be in the city where the student lives; INESEM, for example, is an online school. In Spain the teaching language is Spanish, English or both, depending on the school. When comparing programmes, look at the tools taught, the share of project work, internships, the teaching language and the type of qualification.
Careers
Graduates work in the marketing departments of companies, in agencies, in online shops or as freelancers. EAE lists positions such as digital marketing director, e-commerce manager, SEO manager, SEM manager and social media manager. In Spain, TodoFP lists marketing technician and advertising technician among the jobs for holders of the higher-level FP title.
Official statistics do not treat digital marketing as a separate occupation. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that marketing managers held about 421,600 jobs in 2025 and that employment of advertising, promotions and marketing managers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035; these managers typically need a bachelor's degree and related work experience. Employment of market research analysts, who study consumer preferences to assess potential sales, is projected to grow 7 percent in the same period, with about 82,000 openings a year.
