Adelphi University is a private university based in Garden City, on Long Island (New York). Its roots go back to the Adelphi Academy, founded in Brooklyn in 1863, and according to the university it became the first private coeducational institution of higher education on Long Island in 1929. More than 8,100 students study at the main Garden City campus and at centres in Manhattan (529 Fifth Avenue), Hauppauge and Poughkeepsie, with a student/faculty ratio of 10:1. U.S. News & World Report has named it a Best College among National Universities for nine consecutive years, according to the university.
Adelphi offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes in areas such as healthcare and nursing, STEM, arts and humanities, social work, psychology, business and education, through colleges that include the College of Arts and Sciences, the Derner School of Psychology, the Willumstad School of Business and the College of Nursing and Public Health.
International students, from 63 countries, can enter directly, through the International Accelerator (academic and English support in the first year) or through a non-degree Intensive English programme. An International Services office provides immigration guidance, several programmes are STEM-designated, and semester study abroad is available. Seven residence halls house students on campus.

International undergraduate students may be considered for Adelphi's merit-based scholarships, but the university advises that these should not be expected to cover the full cost of attendance. International students are generally not eligible for US federal student loans, so a financing plan is needed before enrolling.
Adelphi has seven residence halls on its Garden City campus. Each hall is supervised by a full-time professional Assistant Director who lives in the building, with a staff of trained resident assistants, and residents elect a hall council that organises social and educational programmes. From 2026-27 a pilot Two-Year Academic Housing Agreement lets eligible students lock in their housing rate for a second year.
