Auburn University is a public university in Auburn, Alabama (United States), founded in 1856. It is a land-, sea- and space-grant institution and describes itself as one of the largest research-intensive universities in the South. According to the university, U.S. News & World Report 2026 ranks it among the top 50 public universities in the country.

Auburn offers more than 150 undergraduate majors and programmes across its colleges, among them:

  • Agriculture, forestry, wildlife and environment
  • Engineering and computer science (Samuel Ginn College of Engineering)
  • Business (Raymond J. Harbert College of Business)
  • Architecture, design and construction
  • Liberal arts, sciences and mathematics, education and human sciences
  • Nursing, pharmacy and veterinary medicine

The Graduate School offers master's, doctoral and specialist degrees and graduate certificates, from accountancy and business (MBA) to engineering and education.

International students apply directly to the university, online or through the Common Application, or through Auburn Global, the pathway for students with less English proficiency. Freshmen need ACT or SAT scores and proof of English, such as TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5, together with evaluated transcripts and proof of financial support. The application fee is US$60. The university states that it supports international students with academic advising and cultural activities.

The Graduate School offers graduate certificates and master's, specialist (EdS) and doctoral degrees, according to the 2026-2027 Bulletin. Examples:

  • Business: MBA, MAcc, MS and PhD in business, finance and business analytics
  • Engineering: aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, materials and cybersecurity engineering; artificial intelligence engineering (MS)
  • Agriculture and environment: agricultural economics, animal sciences, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, food science

Admission Requirements

Non-US citizens who hold or are obtaining a student visa (usually F-1) apply as international applicants, directly or through the Auburn Global pathway. International freshmen submit:

  • The online application or the Common Application, with the US$60 non-refundable fee
  • ACT or SAT scores sent by the testing agency
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores
  • High school transcripts evaluated by an independent credential evaluator (WES preferred), with a GPA
  • An Affidavit of Financial Support and a supporting bank letter covering at least nine months of costs

Admission is competitive. For the fall term, freshmen apply by 1 February and transfer students by 1 July; for the spring term, by 1 November. The freshman scholarship application deadline is 12 February.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must prove proficiency with one of these minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT: 79
  • TOEFL paper-based: 550
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • PTE: 53

Proficiency can also be shown by graduating from a US high school or by passing English Composition I and II (or equivalent) with a C or better at an accredited US institution. Students with lower English proficiency can apply through Auburn Global.
