Bates College is a college in Lewiston, Maine, in the north-eastern United States. It offers about three dozen majors and two dozen minors, from liberal arts subjects such as history, mathematics and philosophy to STEM fields such as neuroscience, engineering and biochemistry, as well as interdisciplinary and self-designed majors. Through the Engineering Combined Plan, students complete part of their studies at Bates and part at a partner institution such as Columbia University or Dartmouth.
The class of 2030 has 553 students, with an admission rate of 16%; 9% of the class are non-US citizens, and students from more than 70 countries attend Bates.
Applying is free, and the SAT and ACT have been optional since 1984. Non-native English speakers submit TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results. Bates meets the full demonstrated financial need of all admitted students regardless of citizenship, but admission is need-aware for international applicants, and aid also covers study abroad.
