Bowdoin College is a private, selective liberal arts college in Brunswick, Maine, in the northeastern United States, about two hours from Boston. Founded in 1794, it has a residential campus with just over 1,800 students and a student-to-faculty ratio of 8:1. The college awards the Bachelor of Arts degree, with more than 40 majors across 33 departments.

More than 10% of students hold an international passport or come from outside the United States. According to the college, 83% of students complete a career-focused internship or do research with faculty.

Bowdoin's admission is need-blind for international applicants, and the college meets the full calculated financial need of every admitted student, including international students, with grants and scholarships instead of loans. English test scores are optional. Every student receives a MacBook Pro, an iPad and an Apple Pencil.

Bowdoin awards the Bachelor of Arts, with more than 40 majors. The most frequently declared majors are Biochemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Economics, English, Government and Legal Studies, History, Mathematics, Neuroscience and Psychology. Other departments and programmes include:

  • Area and language studies, e.g. Africana, Asian, Hispanic and Arabic Studies
  • Art History, Visual Arts, and Theater and Dance
  • Earth and Oceanographic Science and Environmental Studies
  • Digital and Computational Studies

A Coastal Studies Semester is offered at the Schiller Center.

Admission Requirements

International applicants (anyone who needs a visa to study in the US) are reviewed holistically. Requirements and options include:

  • Official results of national university entrance exams where they exist; predicted or final grades for A-level or IB students
  • Transcripts translated into English
  • SAT optional
  • Optional interview with Bowdoin (between May and December) or an independent interview (Initialview, Vericant or the Duolingo English Test interview)

The US$70 application fee is waived for applicants applying for financial aid or who are the first in their family to attend college.

Language Requirements

Submitting English test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test or Cambridge English) is optional, and there is no minimum score. However, Bowdoin offers no English as a Second Language courses, so all incoming students are expected to be highly proficient in spoken and written English at college level.

Financial Aid

Admission is need-blind for international applicants, and Bowdoin meets the full calculated need of all admitted students, including international students, without loans. Aid consists of grants and need-based scholarships; the average annual aid package for incoming students is US$72,883, and in the most recent admitted class scholarships ranged from US$3,820 to US$98,800. International students submit financial aid documents only after receiving an admission decision. The quick online cost estimator does not apply to international students.
