The University of Maine (UMaine) is Maine's land-grant university and describes itself as the state's R1 research university. Its flagship campus is in Orono, about 15 minutes by car from Bangor International Airport, and it has a regional campus in Machias on Maine's Bold Coast. The university has been teaching for 160 years and has more than 11,000 students from all 50 US states and over 75 countries.
UMaine offers undergraduate majors and minors, graduate programmes through its Graduate School, and online programmes. Its research focuses on areas such as advanced manufacturing, health and life sciences and the blue economy. Campus life includes more than 100 student clubs, and the Black Bears teams compete in NCAA Division I in the America East Conference.
Applying is free and test scores are optional. First-year applicants send a high school transcript and a letter of recommendation, plus transcripts of any college work; there is a separate route for international applicants. According to the university, 98% of first-year students receive scholarships or financial aid.

Admission
Undergraduate applications are submitted through the Common App or the ApplyMaine application. There is no application fee and test scores are optional. Applications are reviewed holistically once complete. Required documents:
- High school transcript
- One letter of recommendation (first-year applicants)
- Transcripts of any completed college work
- Any additional requirements of the chosen programme
Final documents must be sealed and sent from an official source. Decisions can arrive in as little as three days.
