Bemidji State University (BSU) is a university in Bemidji, Minnesota (United States), founded in 1919, on the western shore of Lake Bemidji. It describes itself as Minnesota's North Woods University, is a member of the Minnesota State colleges and universities and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It serves around 5,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and online programmes.

BSU offers 60 undergraduate programmes and 8 graduate degrees, plus emphases, certificates, teacher licensures and pre-professional programmes. Areas include:

  • Aquatic biology, environmental studies and forest management
  • Business administration, accounting and project management
  • Computer science, data science and design
  • Education and music
  • Criminal justice and Indigenous studies

All international students pay the same tuition as Minnesota residents. International applicants submit an online application with a $50 processing fee; English can be shown with, for example, IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 61 (3.5 on the new scale). New international students live on campus for their first year unless they are over 21, and more than $3,000 in scholarships is available to them.

Admission Requirements

  • International Student Application (one application only) and a non-refundable $50 processing fee
  • Statement of purpose
  • Transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions, with certified translations; studies outside the U.S. need a course-by-course evaluation by a NACES-accredited agency
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Financial affidavit showing at least $29,135 USD (estimated cost of one academic year) and bank documents from the last six months
  • International Student Agreement form and passport identification page

Canadian students need an I-20 but not an F-1 visa.

Language Requirements

Undergraduate applicants meet one of: TOEFL iBT 3.5 (tests from 21 January 2026) or 61 (earlier tests), IELTS 5.5, Duolingo 95, SAT Reading sub-score 22, MELAB 70, PTE Academic 47, ELS course 109, completion of Level 3 of BSU's Intensive English Program (MELP), graduation from a U.S. high school with a GPA of 2.0, or 24 U.S. college credits including two English courses with a B or higher. Some applicants are exempt under the English Proficiency Waiver List.

International student costs for the 2026-2027 academic year (two semesters, full time, living on campus in a double room with a meal plan), in USD:

  • Tuition and fees: $11,470 undergraduate / $9,337 graduate
  • On-campus housing and meals: $12,602
  • Health insurance: $2,956
  • Books, supplies and personal expenses: $2,107
  • Total: $29,135 undergraduate / $27,002 graduate

International students pay the same tuition as Minnesota residents. Figures are guidelines and subject to change.

Financial Aid

All international students pay the same tuition as Minnesota residents, with no special requirements to keep this benefit. More than $3,000 in scholarships is available to international students through the Foundation Scholarship Application. International students are not eligible for federal or state loans and grants or for the automatic New Freshman Scholarships. Limited on-campus jobs are open to full-time students after arrival.
