Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU) is a university in Mankato, in the Minnesota River Valley, about 80 miles from the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul). It has 15,721 students and a 21:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and welcomes students from over 100 countries.
MSU offers more than 130 undergraduate and more than 80 graduate programmes, plus over 50 online degree programmes, in person, online or hybrid. Examples include:
- Robotics Engineering (BS) and Artificial Intelligence (MS)
- Aviation: professional flight and aviation management
- Nursing
- Elementary education, also offered online
The Kearney International Center supports about 1,300 international students from more than 95 countries with immigration advising and other services, and Maverick Global Ambassadors help new students settle in. All new international undergraduates automatically receive the International Maverick Scholarship, which reduces tuition. The Center for English Language Programs runs an Intensive English Program for students who need to improve their English before starting a degree.

More than 80 graduate programmes, including master's and doctoral degrees, for example an MS in Artificial Intelligence covering machine learning, deep learning and ethical AI. Graduate and doctoral assistantships are available.
International first-year applicants need:
- Proof of completed secondary education (generally 12 years)
- Cumulative results equivalent to at least a US 3.0 GPA
- One of the minimum English proficiency standards
Country-specific minimums apply (e.g. WASSCE B3 or better, CBSE 61-70 or better). Separate requirements apply to transfer students and to master's and doctoral applicants, and applicants affected by US travel bans or visa pauses can defer their application.
Minimum English scores for undergraduate admission:
- TOEFL iBT 61 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 3.5 (after 21 January 2026)
- IELTS Academic 5.5; Duolingo 95; PTE 47
- MSU Intensive English Program: B+ average with at least B in each Advanced-level course; or ELS Level 112
- SAT Critical Reading 400 or ACT English 15
Aviation (professional flight) and nursing require higher scores.
All degree-seeking international bachelor's students automatically receive the International Maverick Scholarship, which gives reduced tuition and fee rates; it can be kept beyond the first year by meeting the scholarship criteria. Work study and graduate assistantships are also available, and 85% of MSU students receive financial aid.
