Conservatorio Superior de Música "Manuel Castillo"

Higher education centre in Seville, Spain

The Conservatorio Superior de Música "Manuel Castillo" de Sevilla is an official higher music education centre run by the Department of Education of the Junta de Andalucía. The conservatory of Seville became a state centre on 26 August 1933. Since 2001-02 it has been based at Calle Baños 48, in a former Carmelite convent whose construction began in the 15th century; its library holds more than 25,000 catalogued items.

The conservatory teaches higher music studies (enseñanzas artísticas superiores de música) within the European Higher Education Area, ending with a final degree project (Trabajo Fin de Grado). Entrance exams are held, among others, for:

  • Instruments such as horn, clarinet, guitar and organ
  • Early music: harpsichord, recorder and viola da gamba
  • Jazz
  • Choral conducting
  • Musicology

Students and teachers form ensembles such as the Orquesta Sinfónica Conjunta, run with the cultural initiatives centre of the Universidad de Sevilla, a baroque orchestra, a symphonic band, choirs and chamber groups. Admission is through a specific entrance exam: registration is in May and the exams in June, with an extraordinary call in September for remaining places; the procedure includes an academic maturity test. Every year the conservatory exchanges students with other European higher education institutions through Erasmus.
