Dakota State University (DSU) is a public four-year university in Madison, South Dakota, a lakeside town about 50 miles north-west of Sioux Falls. Founded in 1881 as a teacher education institution, it is now known for technology and cybersecurity education, and its students won the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. DSU had 3,842 students in fall 2025.

DSU offers more than 80 degrees and programmes on campus and online, including:

  • Cybersecurity: cyber operations, cyber and network security, cyber defence
  • Computer science, artificial intelligence and computer game design
  • Business administration, financial technology and accounting
  • Digital arts and design, health informatics, biology and teacher education
  • Master's and PhD programmes in AI, computer science, cyber defence, cyber operations and information systems

More than 200 international students from over 60 countries study at DSU, supported by International Student Services, which advises on the student visa. Full-time students within two years of high school graduation live on campus, where nearly 1,000 residents live in halls and apartments.

Admission Requirements

International first-year applicants must show academic ability with at least a B- average (2.60 GPA) or an ACT composite of 18 or SAT of 950. They submit original or certified transcripts (with certified translations, or an ECE/WES evaluation if not in English); unofficial transcripts are accepted for admission and official ones are needed after the F-1 visa is obtained. Transcripts may be sent before the final year is finished, with the expected graduation date. Applicants with any post-secondary study apply as transfer students.

Language Requirements

Non-native speakers must meet one of these minimums:

  • TOEFL iBT 71 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.0 with no subscore below 3.5 (from 21 January 2026)
  • IELTS 6.0 with no subscore below 5.5
  • PTE Academic 58
  • Duolingo 105 (no integrated subscore below 105)
  • ELS Level 111, or WAEC English B3 or higher

Housing

DSU has a two-year live-on requirement: full-time students within two years of high school graduation live on campus, unless exempted. Options range from traditional first-year residence halls to apartments for upper-class students, with nearly 1,000 residents and a residence hall director on call around the clock.
