Black Hills State University (BHSU) is a regional public university in Spearfish, in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, with a second campus in Rapid City. It describes itself as a small campus where students are well known and supported by their faculty. BHSU offers bachelor's degrees and a selection of master's degrees.

First-year applicants need a set of high school courses (English, mathematics, laboratory science, social science and fine arts) with a GPA of at least 2.0, plus either a cumulative GPA of 2.6, an ACT score of 18 (SAT 970) or a rank in the top 60% of their class. BHSU is test optional, so test scores are not required when the GPA or class-rank condition is met. A separate International Studies page covers applications, costs, scholarships and health insurance for F-1 and J-1 visa holders.

Students live in the residence halls of the West Complex (Bordeaux, Heidepriem and Thomas) and East Complex (Humbert and Wenona Cook), or in the Yellow Jacket Apartments for students aged 19 and over. For the 2026-27 academic year, BHSU estimates direct annual costs of US$18,624 for South Dakota residents and US$21,892 for non-residents living on campus.
