East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a public university founded in 1911, with its main campus in Johnson City, in northeast Tennessee. It has nearly 14,000 students from 80 countries and offers about 180 academic programmes. ETSU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award bachelor's, master's, education specialist and doctoral degrees, and it includes an Academic Health Sciences Center with medicine and pharmacy schools.

Undergraduate majors range from Nursing, Computer Science and Digital Media (including game design) to business, education and the sciences, as well as a Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music programme. Graduate study is organised through the Graduate School.

More than 400 international students attend ETSU, supported by the International Enrollment and Services office, which handles admission, immigration matters and student activities. According to the university, it awarded more than US$6,000,000 in institutional scholarships to international students in 2024-2025. On-campus housing with meal plans is available.

ETSU awards master's, education specialist and doctoral degrees through its Graduate School, and has medicine and pharmacy schools within its Academic Health Sciences Center. International graduate applicants need TOEFL iBT 4.0 (79 before 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.5 or PTE 53. Students with a graduate assistantship or tuition scholarship take a free oral proficiency exam on arrival.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduate applicants:

  • Submit the online application and a US$35 application fee
  • Send English proficiency scores, if required for their country
  • Send official high school transcripts (first-year applicants) or transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended (transfer applicants), issued directly by the institution
  • Provide English translations of all documents

First-year applicants need a minimum GPA of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale. Credential evaluations are optional.

Language Requirements

Minimum English scores for undergraduate admission: TOEFL iBT 3.5 (61 before 21 January 2026), IELTS 5.5, PTE 43, Duolingo 95, Oxford ELLT 6 or iTEP Academic 3.6. Graduate applicants need TOEFL iBT 4.0 (79 before 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.5 or PTE 53.

Undergraduate applicants from listed English-speaking countries, or with at least one year at a US high school, are exempt.

Fees

Estimated costs for international students, 2026-27 academic year (undergraduate, 15 credit hours): US$15,343 tuition and US$4,660 housing and meal plan per semester, about US$40,006 for the academic year. Graduate estimate for 2025-26 (9 credit hours): US$13,471 tuition per semester, about US$36,262 for the year including housing and meals.

Financial Aid

International students are eligible for institutional scholarships: according to the university, it awarded more than US$6,000,000 in such scholarships to international students in 2024-2025. Graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships are also available to graduate students.

Housing

Undergraduate cost estimates are based on a double room in Lucille Clement Hall with a meal plan; graduate estimates use a private room in Buc Ridge Apartments with a meal plan.
