Vanderbilt University is a private research university in Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 1873. Its main campus covers 340.7 acres just over a mile from downtown Nashville and is an accredited arboretum. The National Science Foundation places it among the top 25 private universities for research and innovation, and the university reports more than US$1 billion in annual research and development spending. Vanderbilt is also opening new locations in New York City, West Palm Beach and San Francisco.
The university has 12 schools and colleges, including the new College of Connected Computing. Undergraduates choose from more than 65 majors, and the graduate and professional schools offer master's, doctoral and professional degrees, each with its own admissions process.
All first-year students live together on The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons, divided into 10 houses, each led by a faculty head of house; afterwards they can stay in a residential college, join a living-learning community or move to a traditional residence hall. Campus life includes more than 450 student organisations and SEC athletics. Through the Opportunity Vanderbilt programme, undergraduate financial aid is given as grants and scholarships instead of loans; its need-blind admission and full-need commitments apply to US citizens and eligible non-citizens.

Opportunity Vanderbilt is the university's undergraduate financial aid programme. It offers a full-tuition scholarship to households with an income of US$200,000 or less (assuming typical assets) and replaces need-based loans with grants. Its three commitments apply to US citizens and eligible non-citizens:
- Need-blind admission
- Meeting 100% of a family's demonstrated financial need
- Aid awards without loans
Merit-based scholarships for undergraduates are also available.
All first-year undergraduates live on The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons, a residential campus of 10 houses each led by a faculty head of house; houses and rooms are assigned randomly. After the first year students can:
- Stay in a residential college, in an upper-division house
- Join a living-learning community
- Move to one of 12 traditional residence halls
According to the university, 94% of students live on campus for four years. Graduate and professional students can use a near-campus housing option at below-market rent or the Off Campus Referral Service. The standard first-year meal plan includes 21 meals a week.
