Escola Oficial de Idiomas de Santiago de Compostela
Language school in Santiago de Compostela, Spain
The Escola Oficial de Idiomas de Santiago de Compostela is a public official language school belonging to the Galician regional government (Xunta de Galicia). It began teaching in the 2001/2002 academic year. The main building is in the Vite district, next to the north campus of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, and there are five extensions: Santiago (Sar), Negreira, Noia, Ordes and Ribeira. According to the school, it has nearly 5,000 students and 62 teachers.
It offers general courses in seven languages: English, French, Galician, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, at CEFR levels from A1 to C2 depending on the language, as well as courses for specific purposes (business, tourism, CLIL for teachers), refresher courses and blended (semipresencial) courses. Spanish for foreigners has its own department, and Spanish students at B1, B2 and C1 can join the school's three-language theatre group.
Official students attend regular face-to-face courses; external candidates (modalidade libre) enrol only to sit the certification exams. Learners with no previous knowledge start in the first basic course, while those who already know the language can enter a higher course through a placement test or a recognised qualification. The school is also a tutorial centre for the That's English distance programme.
