Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Murcia (ESAD Murcia)

Higher education centre in Murcia, Spain

The Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Murcia (ESAD Murcia) is a higher drama school in the centre of Murcia, on the Plaza de los Apóstoles next to the cathedral. Drama studies in Murcia go back to 1918, when the Conservatorio Provincial de Música y Declamación was created. The Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático y Danza was set up in 1982 as a centre independent of the conservatory, and dance became a separate school in 1993.

The school teaches the Grado en Arte Dramático in two specialities, Interpretación (acting) and Dirección de Escena y Dramaturgia (stage direction and playwriting). Studies include external work placements, electives and a final project (TFE). Admission is through entrance tests (pruebas de acceso).

ESAD Murcia is housed in the former Seminario Conciliar de San Fulgencio, an early 18th-century building restored in 1997, which has a theatre with more than 500 seats. The school receives Erasmus students: incoming applicants send an application form, transcript of records, portfolio and an English and/or Spanish language certificate to its international office. It also publishes Fila A, an annual peer-reviewed journal.
