Lamar University (LU) is a public university in Beaumont, in Southeast Texas (United States), near the border with Louisiana. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and is recognised as a Carnegie Doctoral Research University. More than 18,000 students attend, and the university states that its students come from more than 62 countries.

LU offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees through six undergraduate colleges, a graduate college and an honors college:

The Office of International Education supports international students and also runs study abroad. Undergraduate applicants need TOEFL iBT 71, IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 105, or an English waiver. Students can live in furnished residence-hall suites with live-in staff on call 24 hours. LU awards more than 2,000 scholarships a year, worth over US$20 million in total.

Bachelor's degrees are offered through six undergraduate colleges, plus an honors college:

  • College of Arts and Sciences (including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, History, Mathematics, Psychology)

Admission Requirements

Lamar University admits international students at undergraduate level (first-year and transfer) and graduate level (master's and doctoral), each with its own requirements and checklist. Foreign transcripts must be evaluated, and admitted students receive the I-20 through SEVIS. Applications take 2-3 weeks to process; applicants then receive an "L Number" to check their admission status. Intakes are in fall (August), spring (January) and summer (June).

Language Requirements

All international applicants must show English proficiency with a test score or a waiver. Minimum scores:

  • Undergraduate and graduate Category I (Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering): TOEFL iBT 71, IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 105, PTE 59
  • Graduate Category II (most other graduate programmes): TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120, PTE 67

The requirement is waived, for example, for applicants from English waiver countries or with 48 credits of study taught in English. TOEFL/PTE school code: 6360.

Financial Aid

The Office of Student Aid covers financial aid, scholarships and veterans affairs. Lamar University awards more than 2,000 scholarships a year, totalling over US$20 million; scholarship applications for 2026-27 are open. Contact: [email protected], 409-880-1714.

Housing

On-campus residence halls offer furnished suites with a microwave, high-speed internet and an all-inclusive rate that covers utilities. Residents have common full kitchens, free laundry, a swimming pool and sports courts, 24-hour security with card access, and live-in staff on call 24 hours in each hall.
