National University of Science and Technology

University, Graduate school in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) is a university in Bulawayo, in the south-west of Zimbabwe, established by an Act of the Zimbabwe Parliament in 1991. It opened on 8 April 1991 with 270 students and has had its main campus on Gwanda Road since 1998; it also has an office in Harare. Teaching is in English, and the university focuses on science, technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and business development.

NUST offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through nine faculties:

  • Agricultural Science and Technology, Applied Science and Environmental Science
  • Built Environment and Engineering
  • Business and Economic Sciences, and Communication and Information Science
  • Medicine
  • Science and Technology Education

It also runs a Graduate School of Business Sciences, an Institute of Development Studies and a Centre for Continuing Education. Applications are made online, with day and evening study modes and normal, special and mature entry routes, and intakes in March and August. University halls of residence have limited places, so most students live in private rented accommodation in Bulawayo.

Housing

NUST has two types of student accommodation: university halls of residence and privately owned rented housing.

  • On-campus halls, mainly for undergraduates, with 154 places; registered students apply online to the Dean of Students before the academic year
  • Mpilo Medical School halls at the Mpilo Hospital complex (48 places) and Rose Flats near Bulawayo's city centre (40 places), both for medical students

Residents bring their own bedding, and meals from the Catering Unit are paid with the accommodation fees each semester. Because hall places are scarce, most students rent privately; the university advertises available rooms each semester but the lease is a private agreement between student and landlord.
