Oxford Brookes University is a university in the city of Oxford, England, with campuses in Oxford, including Headington Campus, and a further campus in Swindon. It describes itself as a modern university, and more than 3,400 students from 145 countries study there, according to the university. Oxford Brookes states that it is one of the UK's top 45 institutions in the Complete University Guide 2027 and among the world's top universities in 24 subject areas in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

Courses run from foundation to undergraduate and postgraduate level, alongside research degrees, professional short courses and apprenticeships. Undergraduate subjects include business, law, computing, engineering, architecture, nursing, the sciences and the humanities. International students can also take pathway courses:

  • International Foundation Diplomas
  • Pre-Master's courses

Students can also come for one or two semesters on the exchange and study abroad programme. Undergraduates apply directly or through UCAS, and postgraduates apply directly to the university. Undergraduate courses lead mainly to BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), BEng (Hons) and LLB degrees, some with an integrated master's year (MEng, MBiol). Subject areas include:

Taught postgraduate courses lead to MSc, MA, MBA, MPH, PGDip and PGCert awards. Doctoral options include the Doctor of Education (EdD), the Doctor of Coaching and Mentoring and MPhil/PhD research degrees. Areas include:

Admission Requirements

International undergraduates apply directly to the university or through UCAS (institution code OXFD O66); postgraduate and pathway applicants apply directly. Applications can also be made through the university's international education agents. Applicants usually provide:

  • Full official academic transcripts and certificates, with official translations if the originals are not in English
  • Proof of English language ability, if English is not their first language
  • A personal statement of around 500 words
  • An academic or professional reference letter

Research degree applicants first speak to the Postgraduate Research Tutor. The university has paused Student visa sponsorship for nationals of some countries and applies extra compliance measures for some markets.

Language Requirements

English requirements are set as IELTS Academic scores, and other English qualifications are also accepted. Typical levels:

  • International Foundation programmes: 5.5 overall with 5.5 in all skills
  • Most undergraduate courses: 6.0 overall, with 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in listening and speaking
  • Law, architecture and English literature: 6.5 overall
  • Postgraduate courses: from 6.0 (e.g. business and marketing) to 7.0 (e.g. social work)
  • Study abroad and exchange: 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate courses

The Pre-sessional English course helps students reach the required level; entry is from IELTS 4.5 overall with 4.0 in all skills.

Housing

Oxford Brookes offers accommodation in halls of residence and shared houses for new and existing full-time students. Rooms are in university-managed or approved accommodation, including residences run by third-party providers such as Unite Students, CRM Students, A2Dominion and Host. Students apply through the online accommodation portal. The university's halls and accommodation services comply with The Student Accommodation Code of Practice, and its Accommodation Office is on Headington Campus. The university also runs a lettings service, Brookes Lettings.
