Southern Methodist University (SMU) is a nonsectarian teaching and research university in Dallas, Texas, with the Carnegie R1 research classification. It enrols more than 12,500 students from all 50 US states and more than 90 countries: about 7,500 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students.
Teaching is organised in eight degree-granting schools:
- Cox School of Business
- Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences
- Dedman School of Law
- Lyle School of Engineering
- Meadows School of the Arts
- Moody School of Graduate and Advanced Studies
- Simmons School of Education and Human Development
- Perkins School of Theology
International students are served by the International Office, and SMU Abroad and SMU Taos offer study away options. Students live in one of 11 Residential Commons that combine academic, residential and social life. SMU accepts Duolingo, TOEFL and IELTS for English proficiency; the university states that application fees are currently waived and that three out of four undergraduates receive scholarships or financial aid.

International first-year applicants can apply Early Action, Early Decision, Early Decision II or Regular Decision. They submit:
- Application for admission and personal essay
- Official high school transcript
- Official English proficiency scores
- Counselor recommendation
- Optional: SAT or ACT scores, extracurricular resume and teacher recommendation
Review is holistic. The university states that application fees are currently waived. Admitted students then obtain an SMU I-20.
SMU accepts the Duolingo English Test, TOEFL and IELTS; no minimum scores are published. Admitted students in the Class of 2028 averaged TOEFL 103 and IELTS 7.7. Some applicants may have the requirement waived.
Students live in one of 11 Residential Commons, which combine academic, residential and social life. Upper-division students can stay there or choose other upper-division housing, four SMU-owned apartment buildings next to campus, or one of eight SMU-owned fraternity houses.
