Stony Brook University is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) and one of the state's flagship universities. Its main campus is in Stony Brook, on Long Island, about 60 miles from New York City and four miles from the beach; an on-campus Long Island Rail Road station gives direct access to Manhattan. It is an R1 research university.

Stony Brook offers more than 200 programmes, at undergraduate and graduate level, and more than 80 accelerated programmes in which students earn a bachelor's and a master's degree in five years. Some majors, such as engineering, business, music, nursing and social work, have additional admission requirements. In fall 2025, 3,964 first-year students enrolled.

International students use the same application as other students, through the Common App or the SUNY App, with a US$50 fee. The university is test-optional for the SAT and ACT, but international applicants must show English proficiency; those who do not meet the requirement may be considered for conditional admission.
