The University of Huddersfield is a university in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, with transport links to Leeds, Manchester and London. It became a university in 1992. It has five academic schools (Applied Sciences; Arts and Humanities; Business, Education and Law; Computing and Engineering; and Human and Health Sciences) and offers more than 650 undergraduate, postgraduate and research courses.

The university is rated gold in the UK Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and states that it has more than 4,000 international students from over 100 countries (HESA 2022/23). It reports a Five Star QS rating (2023) and a 37th place worldwide for Performing Arts in the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject. Placements are a key part of many courses. Selected postgraduate courses for international students are also taught at a London campus.

Students who do not meet the direct entry requirements can take pre-sessional English programmes on campus or pathway courses run by Study Group (Foundation Year, International Year One, Pre-Masters). The International Office helps with applications and visa questions. Accommodation is arranged through HudLets, the Students' Union housing office, and all halls of residence are a few minutes' walk from campus.

Bachelor's degrees (BA, BSc, BEng, BMus, LLB and others) usually last three years full-time, often with an optional placement year; integrated master's degrees (MSci, MEng), distance learning and degree apprenticeships are also available.

Taught postgraduate programmes include MA and MSc degrees, the MBA, business master's with professional practice, an MA in TESOL with placement, PGCE teacher training, and master's courses in nursing and pharmacy. Research degrees are offered as PhD, MA by Research and MSc by Research, also by distance learning. Selected postgraduate courses for international students are taught at the London campus.

Admission Requirements

The university accepts a range of international qualifications for most courses and publishes country-specific entry requirements. Applicants complete an application form and provide:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • English language test scores (IELTS, PTE, etc.)
  • A personal statement
  • A copy of a valid passport and, if applicable, a CV
  • References, a portfolio (art, design, architecture, music) or an audition where the course requires it

Applications can be made directly online, through an official representative in the applicant's country or through UCAS. Applicants then track their application in the MyHud portal.

Language Requirements

Students whose first language is not English need a recognised English qualification. Typical levels (requirements may vary by programme):

  • IELTS Academic 6.0 with no element below 5.5 (online test not accepted)
  • TOEFL 87 overall (Reading 22, Listening 21, Speaking 23, Writing 21; Home Edition not accepted)
  • PTE Academic 59 overall and in each skill
  • Cambridge English Advanced, grade C
  • LanguageCert International 65, no component below 60
  • Oxford ELLT Global 6, no component below 5

Applicants from majority English-speaking countries normally meet the requirement. Those below the level can join pre-sessional English programmes on campus.

Fees

Annual international tuition fees for the 2026-27 academic year (September 2026, January 2027 and May 2027 intakes), which apply for the full duration of the course:

  • Bachelor's degrees (BA, BSc, BEng, BMus, LLB): £17,600; work placement year: £3,300
  • Nursing (bachelor's or master's): £19,800
  • MA/MSc programmes: £18,700
  • MBA: £19,690
  • PhD, MA or MSc by Research: £18,700 full-time, £8,500 part-time

Dates and Deadlines

Application deadlines for international students:

  • January 2027 intake (most courses): apply by 31 October 2026, meet offer conditions by 15 November 2026; teaching starts on 11 January 2027
  • MSc Nursing, January 2027 intake: apply by 30 September 2026
  • September 2026 intake (most courses): the deadline was 17 July 2026 (28 June 2026 for Nursing/Allied Health, 30 April 2026 for PGCE)

Housing

Student housing is arranged through HudLets, the accommodation office run by Huddersfield Students' Union, which works with halls of residence and private landlords. All halls of residence are a few minutes' walk from campus. According to the university, citing Student Crowd 2026, average student rent in Huddersfield is £136 a week, against a UK average of £211.
