It opened on 23 September 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy. UTEP has about 26,000 students, 85% of them Hispanic, and describes itself as the country's leading Hispanic-serving university. Its 420-acre campus is known for its Bhutanese-inspired architecture.
UTEP offers about 170 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programmes. Popular fields include biological sciences, nursing, psychology, education, computer science, mechanical engineering, criminal justice and finance, and research areas include aerospace, cancer, 3D printing, cybersecurity, bilingual education and cross-border economics.
