The Universidade dos Açores (UAc) is the public university of the Azores, the Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic. It was founded on 9 January 1976 as the Instituto Universitário dos Açores and was renamed Universidade dos Açores in 1980. Since 1994 it has reported solely to the Portuguese national government. True to the island setting, it is spread over three campuses, in Ponta Delgada, Angra do Heroísmo and Horta.
Teaching is organised in four faculties and two schools:
- Faculty of Agrarian and Environmental Sciences
- Faculty of Sciences and Technology
- Faculty of Economics and Management
- Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities
- School of Health
- School of Technologies
Research institutes cover marine sciences (OKEANOS), agricultural and environmental technology (IITAA) and volcanology and risk assessment (IVAR), and the InUAc incubator supports start-up projects. The university also runs junior, senior and lifelong-learning programmes. The social services office (SASE) handles accommodation, meals and scholarships, and the External Relations Office manages mobility, internships and international students ([email protected]).
