About universities in Portugal

Higher education in Portugal comprises two subsystems, viz. Polytechnic and University education. This system consists of public universities, private universities, polytechnic institutions and public or private university institutes. Higher education in public universities and university institutes in Portugal is provided on a competitive basis, by enforcing a system of numerus clausus through a national database on student admissions. Various other methods of admission to colleges in Portugal include academic transfers from other institutes, international student exchange programs, foreign students from the Lusosphere, as well as sports merit admissions.

The major difference in the two college subsystems in Portugal is that while the university system is highly research-oriented and theoretical knowledge is the main emphasis; the Polytechnic system provides a more practical and vocationally oriented education. An overview of the courses offered in each of the subsystems is given below:
  • Most of the profession- oriented degrees such as preschool and primary school teaching, nursing, accounting technician, health care technician etc are only offered by the polytechnic institutions.
  • University Institutes give degrees in medicine and veterinary medicine, economics, law, psychology, pharmaceutical sciences and natural sciences.
  • Courses like engineering, agriculture, sports, technology, management, education, and humanities are taught both in university and polytechnic institutions in Portugal.
The university system in Portugal consists of 13 public universities, a public open university, one public university institute, and a number of private universities and university institutes. This system was established in the 13th century. The Polytechnic system, on the other hand, consists of 15 state-run polytechnic institutes, public and private non-integrated polytechnic institutions, and other similar institutions. Most of these were formed in the 1980s by converting erstwhile commercial schools and industrial centers into higher education schools.

Many colleges in Portugal adhere to the Bologna Process, a European reform process aimed at establishing a European Higher Education Area by 2010. According to this, the entire higher education system is divided into a three cycles of study, with each cycle representing a different level of higher education.

1st cycle degree- Licenciatura: The first cycle of study, called a licenciatura represents the bachelor’s degree in Portugal, and lasts for 3 to 4 years or six to eight curricular semesters of full-time study to complete the degree. Students pursuing licenciatura have classroom tutorials, personal orientation, field projects as well as assignments. Bachelor’s studies in Portugal involve 180 to 240 credits, known as ECTS; to attain this degree, students are required to pass all the curricular units in the course's curricula.

2nd cycle degree -Mestrado : The second cycle mestrado, corresponds to a Master’s degree in Poland and lasts for one to two years. This cycle of study has 90 to 120 credits (ECTS). To attain this degree, a student must pass all the units of the curricula as well as complete a thesis, project or stage report. Foreign students holding a higher education degree or equivalent can apply to the master degree's cycle of study.

3rd (Doctorate) cycle -Doutoramento: The third cycle of study lasts three years and is for attaining a doctorate, in Portugal called a doutoramento. This includes the elaboration of an original thesis, especially produced for the purpose of a doctorate and coherent with the branch of specialty which may require additional research based curricular units. Students possessing a master’s degree or equivalent are eligible for applying for doutoramento.
