The University of Sussex is a campus university in Brighton, on England's south coast. It received its Royal Charter in August 1961 and was the first of the new UK universities founded in the 1960s. Sussex offers undergraduate, master's and PhD courses, with more than 200 undergraduate courses to choose from.

  • Bachelor's degrees (BA, BSc, BEng, LLB) in subjects such as business and finance, computer science and artificial intelligence, engineering, life sciences, media, drama, law and international development
  • Degrees with a professional or industrial placement year, or with a study abroad year
  • Foundation years in several subject areas
  • International Foundation Year and International Year One at the International Study Centre

The International Foundation Year is for international students who do not meet the direct entry requirements; it combines English language and study skills training. The university provides accommodation for around 4,000 students and guarantees a room to new undergraduate, master's and PhD students starting in the 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years. Funding options include international scholarships, PhD studentships and a scheme for first-generation students; US citizens can use Federal Direct Loans. Separate fee and funding information exists for visiting and exchange students.

Scholarships and financial aid

Sussex offers undergraduate and master's scholarships, including international scholarships, as well as PhD studentships and a scheme for first-generation students. US citizens and eligible non-citizens who accept a place on an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate programme can apply for a Federal Direct Loan. The university also lists student jobs and part-time work.

Housing

The University of Sussex provides on-campus accommodation for around 4,000 students. A room is guaranteed for new undergraduate, master's and PhD students starting in the 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years. The West Slope development adds 376 en-suite rooms on campus from autumn 2026, and self-catered rooms can also be booked over the summer.
