Geography Studies in The United Kingdom

Geography in the United Kingdom covers both human geography (cities, population, economy, culture) and physical geography (landscapes, climate, water, ecosystems), and most degrees let students lean towards one side as they progress. Fieldwork and spatial data skills such as geographical information systems (GIS) are a regular part of the courses. This directory lists 36 schools for geography in the UK, seven of them in London, three in Edinburgh and two in Cheltenham.

How the degree is organised

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the first degree is a bachelor's degree with honours, a level 6 qualification that normally takes three years full time. It is awarded as a BA or a BSc: King's College London offers a three-year Geography BA, while The University of Sheffield, Lancaster University and the University of Southampton offer three-year Geography BSc courses. In Scotland, degree-level study usually takes four years. The University of St Andrews awards geography both as a BSc and as an MA (Hons), the Scottish first degree in arts, and states that the content of the subject is the same in both.

Lancaster introduces human, physical and environmental geography in the first year before students specialise. Southampton's BSc teaches GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis. Field classes are a feature everywhere: King's College London expects to run international field trips with likely destinations including Berlin, Cyprus and Lisbon, Lancaster uses Morecambe Bay for coastal fieldwork, and Sheffield states that it covers the cost of travel, accommodation and food for all field classes.

After the bachelor's degree, a taught master's (MA or MSc, level 7) usually takes one year; Southampton's MSc in Environmental Management and Sustainability is an example. A doctorate (PhD) is a level 8 qualification.

Accreditation

The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), a learned society and professional body that has been active since 1830, accredits geography degrees. According to Lancaster University, the accreditation recognises programmes that deliver the knowledge, skills and professional attributes expected of geography graduates. The courses cited here at King's College London, Sheffield, Southampton and Lancaster state that they are accredited.

London examples in this directory are King's College London, University College London and the University of Westminster, with Royal Holloway University of London nearby in Egham. In Scotland the list includes The University of Edinburgh, the University of St Andrews, the University of Aberdeen and the University of Stirling; in Wales, Cardiff University and Swansea University. Elsewhere in England there are the University of Oxford, The University of Manchester, the University of Bristol, The University of Sheffield, Lancaster University, the University of Southampton, Newcastle University, Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham.

Admission and English level

Universities and colleges set their own entry requirements, usually stated as A levels, and many accept equivalent international qualifications. UK ENIC, the official organisation for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications, issues statements that compare a foreign qualification with the UK system. The courses cited here ask for AAB at King's College London and Sheffield and BBB at Lancaster.

For English, Southampton requires IELTS 6.5 overall, Sheffield 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component and Lancaster 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component. Undergraduate applications are sent through UCAS, with a maximum of five choices. For 2027 entry, the equal consideration date for most undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time); for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge it is 15 October 2026. Many universities accept international applications until later in the year.

Costs and visa

Fees depend on fee status. Lancaster University lists undergraduate fees for 2027/28 of £10,050 for home students and £31,700 for international students on its Geography BSc. Southampton lists £10,050 for UK students and £33,900 for EU and international students for a year's study. Field trip costs are handled differently by each university, so it is worth checking what is included.

International students normally need a Student visa for a full degree. According to GOV.UK (checked on 8 October 2026), applicants must be 16 or over, hold an offer from a licensed student sponsor and prove English equivalent to CEFR level B2 for degree-level study. The application costs £558 from outside the UK, plus a healthcare surcharge of £776 per year for students. Applicants must also show living-cost funds of £1,529 per month for courses in London or £1,171 per month elsewhere, for up to nine months, and can apply at the earliest six months before the course starts.

Careers

Sheffield states that its physical geography graduates go on to careers in research, sustainability, meteorology, environmental consultancy, GIS analysis and policy. Southampton's examples of graduate jobs include geography teacher, GIS technician, surveyor, energy specialist and planning officer. After the degree, the Graduate visa allows a stay of 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027.
