The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison) is a public land-grant university and major research institution founded in 1848. Its lakeside campus is in Madison, the state capital of Wisconsin, and it belongs to the Universities of Wisconsin, a system of 13 universities, and to the Big Ten. The university describes itself as one of the 10 largest research institutions in the United States, spending more than US$1 billion a year on research, and counts 22 Nobel Prizes among its community. Its guiding principle, the Wisconsin Idea, holds that the university's work should improve people's lives beyond the campus.
UW–Madison offers undergraduate degrees, graduate programmes through its Graduate School and professional degrees in its professional schools:

Continuing studies and online degree programmes are also available. Tuition depends on the academic programme, the number of credits and residency; students on F-1 or J-1 visas pay international rates plus an International Services Fee. The university's tuition-free initiatives, such as Bucky's Tuition Promise, are reserved for Wisconsin residents. Students can live in the university residence halls with a dining plan.
