The University of Delaware (UD) is a state-assisted, privately governed research university whose main campus is in Newark, Delaware, with further locations in Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown and Lewes. It traces its roots to a private academy founded in 1743 and took its current name in 1921. UD describes itself as a state-funded, public university.
Students choose from about 150 undergraduate majors and 100 minors, or from more than 250 graduate and post-baccalaureate programmes, as well as online programmes. The university has more than 100 study abroad programmes and an Honors College.
International students can apply for direct freshman admission through the Common Application, or for conditional admission through the Academic Transitions programme at UD's English Language Institute (ELI), which does not require a TOEFL or IELTS score and leads to full-time undergraduate study. International freshmen are automatically considered for scholarships of $10,000 to $15,000 per year, but need-based aid is not available to them. Housing is guaranteed for first-time freshmen admitted in the 2026-27 academic year, in more than 40 residential buildings.
