The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell, UML) is a public research university (Research 1) in the city of Lowell, Massachusetts, close to Boston and part of the Massachusetts technology corridor. It has more than 16,700 undergraduate and graduate students from 50 US states and 100 countries; about 10% are international students. The student-faculty ratio is 17:1.
UMass Lowell offers more than 120 undergraduate programmes and 77 graduate programmes, plus more than 150 online and professional programmes, including online-to-campus pathways for international students. Every first-year student is guaranteed at least one career-connected experience, more than 800 companies offer co-op positions, and students can choose from more than 300 study abroad programmes. Many programmes qualify for STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT).
The International Students & Scholars Office advises on immigration rules. International students can work on campus up to 20 hours a week during term, and first-year international undergraduates may be considered for selected merit scholarships. The campus has 10 residence halls, including suites, apartments and living-learning communities.

UMass Lowell offers several scholarships for international graduate students, who may also receive teaching or research assistantships from their departments. First-time, first-year international undergraduates may be considered for selected merit scholarships and fellowships, and current students can apply for endowed scholarships through the River Hawk Scholarship Portal. International students must show proof of financial support before receiving an I-20 or DS-2019, so scholarships should not be counted on as guaranteed funding.
