The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is a public university and New Hampshire's land, sea and space grant institution, with R1 status as a top-tier research university. Its main residential campus is in Durham, New Hampshire (United States); it also has a city campus in Manchester, the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law in Concord, and online programmes. UNH has more than 11,300 undergraduates and about 2,500 graduate students.

Undergraduates can choose from more than 200 majors, with research and internship opportunities, in colleges such as Engineering and Physical Sciences, Health and Human Services, Liberal Arts, Life Sciences and Agriculture, and the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics. Graduate students choose from over 100 master's and doctoral programmes, and accelerated master's programmes allow students to finish both degrees in as few as five years.

International undergraduates apply through the Common Application and are supported by the Office of International Students and Scholars. The university advertises merit scholarships of up to US$40,000 for international students. On campus there are 25 residence halls as well as apartments, themed communities and graduate housing.

Programmes

More than 200 majors, plus associate degrees with 2+2 pathways to bachelor's degrees (e.g. applied animal science, forest technology, veterinary technology) and pre-law, pre-med and pre-vet programmes. Colleges and schools include:

Graduate programmes

Over 100 master's and doctoral programmes, with about 2,500 graduate students, and accelerated master's programmes (both degrees in as few as five years). The UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law offers the JD, LL.M, master's and certificate programmes, with specialisations in intellectual property, commerce and technology, and international criminal law and justice.

Admission

UNH reviews each application holistically, looking for a university-preparatory curriculum in English, mathematics, science, social science and a world language. International first-year applicants submit:

  • Common Application and US$65 fee
  • Secondary and/or university transcripts with English translations (unofficial copies accepted to apply; official copies after enrolment)
  • One letter of recommendation
  • English proficiency scores
  • Copy of the passport biographic page

SAT/ACT are optional (test-optional policy). Music and theatre applicants audition; studio art applicants submit a portfolio. There are no interviews.

Language requirements

Required if English is not the applicant's first language; scores must be sent by the testing agency. Minimum scores:

  • TOEFL iBT 87 (before January 2026) or 4.5 (from January 2026)
  • IELTS 6.5
  • Duolingo 120
  • PTE Academic 59
  • LanguageCert 70; TOEFL Essentials 8.5

Waivers from an institution are considered case by case.

Scholarships and financial aid

UNH advertises merit scholarships of up to US$40,000 for international students. Admitted students who receive a merit scholarship with their offer are also invited, usually in late February or early March, to apply for the limited and competitive international student scholarships; continuing students with a GPA of 3.1 or above can also apply.

Housing

UNH has 25 residence halls (doubles, suites and themed communities) and on-campus apartments; Babcock Hall and apartments serve graduate students. Housing is also available in summer for students taking courses, doing research or interning, and during breaks. After paying the enrolment deposit, students apply for housing, form or join a roommate group and choose their room.
