The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is a private Catholic university in San Antonio, Texas (United States), founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The university describes itself as the largest Catholic university in Texas and is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Its 154-acre main campus is on Broadway in Alamo Heights, and UIW also has two campuses in Mexico and a European Study Center in Strasbourg, France.

Its 11 schools and colleges offer more than 100 undergraduate majors, minors and concentrations and over 25 graduate and doctoral programmes, in fields such as business, education, media and design, engineering, cyber security, nursing, pharmacy, optometry, osteopathic medicine and rehabilitation sciences. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1. Some online programmes are taught in Spanish, including an MBA and an M.A. in Education.

International students make up 25% of enrollment and come from 67 countries, and UIW has more than 140 sister schools for study abroad and exchange. International applicants submit an English transcript, proof of English proficiency (for example TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5), a passport copy and proof of financial support. Undergraduate applicants applying from Latin America receive a 15% tuition discount.

Admission Requirements

International application packages:

  • Freshmen: international application, official secondary school transcript in English, proof of English proficiency, passport copy (and any US visa), proof of financial support
  • Transfer students: university transcripts in English plus a course-by-course credential evaluation of foreign credits
  • Graduate students: university transcripts in English with proof of graduation, two letters of recommendation, English proficiency, passport copy and financial support; some programmes require GRE/GMAT scores, writing samples or interviews
  • Exchange students: nomination by a UIW sister school

No tests are required for undergraduate admission. Conditional admission is available for applicants who do not yet meet the English requirement.

Language Requirements

Minimum scores (undergraduate / graduate):

Freshmen may also qualify with SAT evidence-based reading 520 or ACT English 20, IB diploma or a US-accredited international school. Applicants who studied in Australia, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand or the United Kingdom are exempt. Conditional admission is possible for those below these levels.

Fees

Tuition for the 2026-2027 academic year:

  • Undergraduate, 12-18 credit hours: US$18,900 per semester (fall and spring)
  • Undergraduate, under 12 or over 18 credit hours: US$1,235 per credit hour
  • Graduate: US$1,190 per credit hour
  • Doctoral: US$1,260 per credit hour

International students also pay an annual health insurance fee of US$2,134. Professional programmes (pharmacy, optometry, osteopathic medicine and others) have their own rates.

Financial Aid

Scholarships for first-degree undergraduate students (effective fall 2026):

  • Freshman academic scholarships of US$9,000 to US$22,000 per year, based on secondary school GPA and awarded automatically
  • Transfer academic scholarships of US$13,000 to US$18,000 per year
  • Latin American Scholarship: 15% tuition discount for undergraduates applying from their home country in Latin America, without a recruiting agent
  • South East Asia Scholarship: 15% discount for applicants from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam
  • US$2,000 per year for graduates of Catholic high schools

Graduates of UIW sister schools receive a 15% discount on a master's degree. Renewal requires a GPA of at least 2.0.
