Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is a public, historically Black university in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (United States). Founded in 1892, it is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system. Its campus covers 117 acres.
WSSU offers more than 40 undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral programmes. Many undergraduate programmes include hands-on research or study abroad options. Areas of study include:
- Arts and entertainment
- Business and entrepreneurship
- Communication, languages and media
- Education
- Health sciences and nursing
- Science, technology, engineering and mathematics
- Social justice and advocacy
Classes are taught in English and the university does not offer English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, so non-native speakers must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. Most international students start in the fall semester, although January entry is also possible. Before admission can be completed, international applicants must document sufficient funds for the first two semesters. WSSU has residence halls on campus, and students are advised to apply for housing as early as possible; information on off-campus housing is also provided.

International undergraduates can start in the fall semester or in January. By the international application deadline they must submit:
- The completed application
- Official secondary school and college transcripts, with foreign records evaluated by a credential evaluation service (SpanTran is recommended; college coursework needs a course-by-course evaluation)
- SAT or ACT scores, required for applicants under 24
- TOEFL or IELTS scores for non-native English speakers
- Proof of sufficient funds for the first two semesters, needed to issue the I-20 or DS-2019
All classes are taught in English and WSSU does not offer ESL courses, so students must speak and write English fluently. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score, even if English was the language of instruction at their previous school; the page does not state minimum scores. The WSSU code for TOEFL is 5909, and the university is itself an official TOEFL test centre.
International students are not eligible for financial aid through the student loan programmes. They may work on campus up to 20 hours a week during the semester and up to 40 hours during vacations, although the university notes that such jobs are very limited. Graduate students can ask their department advisor about graduate assistantships.
WSSU has several residence halls on campus; descriptions, photos and virtual tours of each are on the Housing and Residence Life website. Students are advised to apply for housing as early as possible to secure their preferred hall or roommate group. The office also provides information on off-campus housing and can be reached at 336-750-3471.
