Because of their transformative the University of Antioquia affects all sectors of society through research, teaching and extension. Research and teaching are the pillars of the academic life of the University and both are linked with the extension to achieve corporate goals of an academic or social.

The research, source of knowledge, generating and support of teaching practice, is part of the curriculum. Aims at generating and testing knowledge, aimed at developing science, knowledge and technology, and production and adaptation of technology for finding solutions to the problems of the region and country. Teaching, research-based, can train students in disciplinary and professional fields of their choice, by developing curricula and use teaching methods that facilitate the achievement of ethical and academic purposes of the university. Diffusive in character and training of teaching has a social function that determines for scientific and moral responsibilities professor against students, the institution and society.
