The Universidade Federal de Paraíba, or the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), formerly known as the University of Paraíba, is a municipal institution of higher education, focusing on teaching, research and community extension and development.  The university, which is overseen by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, is a multi-campus institution, with facilities in the cities of Joao Pessoa, Areia, Bananeiras, Mamanguape and Rio Tinto.

More about the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB)

Originally created in the city of Areia in 1934, the Federal University of Paraíba was the first top-level school of higher education in Northeastern Brazil, initially focusing solely on the areas of Medicine, Theology, and subjects leading to traditional careers in the region, such as Agriculture.  The first students of the Federal University of Paraíba all hailed from ruling class and wealthy families, as was the case in most universities throughout the country of Brazil.  As time went on, however, the university consistently expanded its curriculum and boosted its enrollment as a way of attracting qualified students of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

Today the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) consists of five campuses:

Campus I

Located in the city of João Pessoa, Campus number I is the largest of the five campuses and the most diverse educationally. It is home to the Center of Physical and Natural Sciences (CCEN); the Center for Human Sciences, Arts and Letters (CCHLA); the Center for Health Sciences (CCS); the Center for Applied Social Sciences (CCSA); the Education Center (EC); the Technology Center (TC); the Center for Legal Studies (CCJ); the Biotechnology Center; the Center for Communications and Tourism; the Center for Alternate and Renewable Energy; and the Computer Center.

Campus II

Located in the city of Areia, where the Federal University of Paraiba was originally founded, Campus II now comprises the Center for Agricultural Sciences (CCA).

Campus III

Campus III is situated in the town of Bananeiras. This campus plays host to the Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CCHSA).

Campus IV

Located in the cities of Mamanguape and Rio Tinto, Campus IV is home to the Center of Applied Sciences and Education (CCAE). It is here that most of the university’s future educators learn their trade.

Campus V

Like Campus I, Campus V is also located in the city of João Pessoa. This sprawling campus is home to the University’s new Center of Technology and Regional Development.

Two new centers were also created in 2011 by the University Council (CONSUNI). They are the Center for Informatics and the Center for Renewable Energy Alternatives.

Federal University of Paraiba: Programs and Students

Over the past five years, with the accession of Brazil’s new Restructuring and Expansion Plan (RALLY), the Federal University of Paraíba has literally doubled in size.  Today, it is the largest institution of higher education in the North and Northeast—the school that offers the largest number of vacancies in their selection process, not just for students, but also for faculty and staff.
In terms of undergraduate education, in the years between 2005 and the present day the number of accredited degree programs at the Federal University of Paraíba has increased from 50 to 104, and the number of students enrolled at the institution has risen from 18,759 to 29,629.
The statistics for graduate education are equally impressive and have also increased dramatically, with the number of Master-degree level programs having increased from 32 to 50 during that same eight-year period, and the number of graduate students increasing from 470 to 1,290.  There are also now hundreds of students pursuing approved doctorate (PhD) programs at the Federal University of Paraiba, and many more undergoing specialty training in fields such as pharmacy, law, medicine and veterinary sciences.
The academic improvement of UFPB is indisputable. In fact, in evaluations of the institution’s higher education programs, Brazil’s General Index of Courses Assessed Institution (PMI), which ranks universities and their individual degree programs on a scale of 1 to 5, gave the Federal University of Paraiba an average a score of 4 or more across the board.

Since its inception and throughout its history, UFPB has been fulfilling its key role in promoting teaching, research and community development throughout the region. In the sphere of higher education, UFPB has achieved both national and international recognition for their contribution to higher learning and technological and scientific advancement. It has also won may accolades for its continued commitment to the training of professionals in a variety of different fields—graduates that go on to become leaders in the state of Paraiba and in the country of Brazil as a whole.
