According to the university, it has 5,564 students and 1,179 employees.

Teaching and research are organised in two faculties:

• Faculty of Human and Social Sciences
• Faculty of Science and Engineering

In 2024 the university awarded 643 master's degrees and 68 doctoral degrees. Its strategic research profiles are minority research, technologies for a sustainable future, solutions for health, and the sea. ÅAU also offers continuous learning through its centre for lifelong learning.

The university describes itself as small enough for professors to be easily accessible, and its international network allows students to spend part of their studies abroad. Both Turku and Vaasa are university towns with a large student population.
