About Sheffield
Sheffield is a large city in South Yorkshire, in the centre of England where the north meets the Midlands. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Sheffield local authority had around 556,500 inhabitants at the 2021 census, 0.7% more than in 2011.
It is a big student city: according to the University of Sheffield, students make up roughly ten per cent of the population. A third of the city lies in the Peak District National Park, and Sheffield has the largest theatre district in England outside London.

Getting around and daily life
Sheffield is compact: the University of Sheffield campus is a 25-minute walk from the railway station, and the tram between the university and the station takes around 10 minutes. Buses serve the whole city, and the Supertram runs to Meadowhall shopping centre and Sheffield Arena; most bus companies and the Supertram offer discounted tickets. Single bus fares in England are capped at £3 until the end of 2026 and at £2 from 1 January 2027.
London St Pancras is about 2 hours away by direct train. The nearest airport with a direct train from Sheffield is Manchester, about 1 hour 15 minutes by public transport. The Hope Valley Line to Manchester also stops at several Peak District villages.
Degree students from outside the UK need a Student visa, which costs £558 from outside the UK. After graduating, the Graduate visa allows a stay of two years for applications made by 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027. For an English course of up to six months at an accredited institution, entering as a visitor may be enough.
