Seville is one of the main places in Spain to learn Spanish. Several of its language schools have been teaching foreigners for decades: Taller Flamenco was established in 1994, the Instituto de Estudios de la Lengua Española (IELE) was founded in 1996, and CLIC International House says it draws on 40 years of experience. Most are in or near the historic centre, so classes, housing and daily life are within walking distance, and Spanish is the language you hear outside the classroom too.
The city suits short-stay visitors, Erasmus+ and gap-year students, US university students on study abroad programmes, and residents who need an official certificate.
What the language schools in Seville offer
Most private schools run Spanish courses all year, for all levels from A1 to C2, with new groups starting most Mondays. Typical formats are:
- General and intensive group courses of 15 to 30 lessons a week
- One-to-one and small-group private classes
- DELE, SIELE and CCSE exam preparation
- Business Spanish and courses for seniors or teenagers
- Spanish combined with flamenco or culture classes
Some examples: CLIC International House offers intensive courses of 20, 25 or 30 lessons of 50 minutes a week, in classes of 6 to 10 students, from a minimum age of 16. IELE, in the city centre, runs a 20-hour intensive course with a maximum of 10 students per class, alongside general Spanish, business Spanish and DELE preparation. don Quijote Sevilla, in the Arenal neighbourhood, offers intensive programmes from 20 to 30 lessons a week and preparation for DELE, SIELE and CCSE. Idiomas Carlos V Sevilla states that it organises DELE and SIELE exams and helps students with housing and visa paperwork. Taller Flamenco combines Spanish with dance, guitar, singing and cajón, and the International College of Seville (ICS), in the city since 1982, runs fall, spring and summer study abroad programmes with US-aligned coursework.
The public option is the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas Sevilla-Macarena, part of the Andalusian public school system. Its Spanish as a foreign language department publishes groups and timetables for the 2026-27 academic year. Places are allocated through an official admission and enrolment process, with a placement test for students who already speak some Spanish, and the school also has semi-distance and external (exam-only) modes.
Accreditation and official exams
The Instituto Cervantes runs an accreditation system for centres that teach Spanish as a foreign language, and accredited centres display its logo. Idiomas Carlos V Sevilla, for example, states on its website that it holds this accreditation; check each school's own page before booking. The DELE diplomas are official certificates awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's education ministry and cover all CEFR levels, from A1 to C2.
Costs
Prices are set by each school and depend on the number of lessons and the length of the stay. Two examples from the schools' own sites for 2026:
- CLIC: Intensive 20 costs €235 per week for 1 to 4 weeks, falling to €180 per week for 24 to 31 weeks, registration fee included
- IELE: the 20-hour intensive course costs €180 per week
Accommodation is extra. Schools such as don Quijote offer host families, student residences and shared flats. For getting around, a single urban bus ticket on Tussam costs €1.40, or €0.76 per trip with the Consorcio de Transportes card, at prices in force since 1 July 2025.
Practical tips
- Visas: study stays of less than 90 days do not require a study visa, according to the Spanish consulate in London; for longer Spanish courses, apply at least two months before the start date
- Season: Seville is very hot in summer; at the AEMET Sevilla Aeropuerto station (1981-2010 normals) the average is 10.9 °C in January and 28.2 °C in July, so spring and autumn are popular for courses
- Exams: if you need a certificate, check the DELE or SIELE dates in Seville before choosing your course dates
