Leadership Study Programs
Leadership as a subject is the study of how people guide teams and organisations: how decisions are made, how groups work together, how change is managed and what ethical responsibilities come with authority. It sits between business, psychology and education. Saint Mary's College of California, which runs a department of leadership programmes, puts the starting point this way: leadership can be practised by people in any position, with or without formal authority.
Students learn leadership theory, organisational behaviour, communication, team building, ethics, critical thinking and change management, usually through case studies and projects in a real organisation. At Wright State University, for example, the organisational leadership degree combines courses in communication and administrative skills with leadership theory and practice, and students complete a leadership skills project. Many programmes are designed for people who already work and want to move into a management role.
Qualifications and levels
Leadership is taught at every level, and often as a specialisation inside a business degree or an MBA:
- Certificates and short courses: the Certificate in Leadership and Management at University of Phoenix takes 18 credits, taught online in courses of five to six weeks
- Bachelor's degrees: usually called organisational leadership. Wright State University offers a Bachelor of Science, a minor and an undergraduate certificate
- Master's degrees: the most common level. The Master of Science in Management and Organizational Leadership at Albertus Magnus College is taught fully online, with courses such as Moral Leadership and Organizational Behavior, and most students finish in a year when they take two classes at a time. - Doctorates: the PhD in Organizational Leadership at Eastern University has 60 credits of coursework plus a dissertation, can be completed in five years, and is taught online with three residencies a year on campus
In Spain, leadership is mostly taught in master's programmes and MBAs at business schools. Official Spanish master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits under Real Decreto 822/2021. The MBA at ESDEN Business School in Madrid, for example, lasts one academic year and has 12 modules and 60 ECTS credits, including a module on human resources and management skills that covers leadership.
Where to study it
SpainExchange lists 100 schools for leadership. Fifty-eight are in the United States, 21 in Spain and five in the United Kingdom. Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Zambia and Zimbabwe have two each, and Canada, New Zealand, Ghana and Finland one each.
The US schools range from large public universities such as The University of Texas at Austin, San Diego State University and Purdue University to smaller private colleges such as Albertus Magnus College and Mount St. Joseph University. Teaching there is in English, and many programmes run online. Albertus Magnus College asks non-native English speakers for a TOEFL score of at least 550 on the paper-based test or 80 on the internet-based test.
The Spanish schools are mainly business schools and other private centres, many of them in Madrid and Barcelona, such as ESDEN Business School and Cerem in Madrid, and they teach largely in Spanish. Their qualifications are not all of the same kind. ESDEN describes the qualifications of its MBA as both its own and official ("Títulos Propios y Oficiales"), and Cerem labels each programme as a private Cerem qualification, a university's own qualification or a double master's with an official degree. Ask the school what recognition the qualification has before you enrol, especially if you need it for a doctorate or for public-sector jobs.
Careers
A leadership qualification does not lead to one profession. Graduates work as team leaders, project and operations managers, human resources and training specialists, and managers in non-profit organisations, schools, health care and public administration. Senior posts depend on experience as much as on study: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that top executives typically need at least a bachelor's degree and considerable work experience, and that many advance within their own organisations.
For the United States, the BLS projects that employment of top executives will grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035. General and operations managers, the largest group, numbered about 3.6 million in 2025. Across all management occupations it projects about 1.1 million openings a year. Is a leadership degree the same as an MBA?
No. An MBA covers all areas of business, such as finance, marketing and operations, with leadership as one part. A leadership degree concentrates on people, teams, ethics and organisational change.
Do I need work experience to study leadership?
Bachelor's programmes take students without experience. Many master's programmes and most doctorates are aimed at working professionals, so check the admission requirements of each school.
Can I study leadership online?
Yes, often. The master's programme at Albertus Magnus College and the certificate at University of Phoenix are taught online, and the Eastern University PhD combines online coursework with short residencies.
How long does a master's in leadership take?
Usually one to two years. Most students at Albertus Magnus College finish in a year, and the ESDEN MBA in Madrid lasts one academic year.
