Leadership Studies in The United States

Leadership is taught in the United States as an applied, interdisciplinary subject that draws on management, psychology, communication and ethics. It rarely has a faculty of its own. Programmes sit in business schools, schools of education, colleges of professional studies and, in a few cases, military academies, and the degree titles vary: organizational leadership, leadership studies, strategic leadership or educational leadership.

How leadership programmes are organised

Leadership can be studied at every level of the US system:

Many of these programmes are designed for people who already work. Idaho State University describes its bachelor's degree as 100% online and asynchronous, and Walden University's MS in Leadership is an online programme of 45 quarter credits that, according to the university, can be finished in as few as 15 months. Eastern University's PhD in Organizational Leadership combines online coursework with three residencies per year; it includes 60 credits of coursework and can be completed in five years.

Admission, language and visa

Teaching is in English, and US universities require an English language proficiency test before admission. Undergraduate applications for a September start are typically due between November and January. Master's and doctoral programmes in leadership often ask for a bachelor's degree and professional experience.

International students on a campus-based degree programme normally hold an F student visa, which requires admission to an institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Recognition of the qualification

US institutions are accredited at national or regional level by independent accrediting bodies, and recognition of a degree by employers and other universities is linked to that accreditation. Business-school programmes may also hold specialised business accreditation such as ACBSP.

According to the BLS, employment in management occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035, and the median annual wage for the group was $126,520 in May 2025.
