Architecture in Chile is a university degree that leads to two things at once: the academic degree of Licenciado en Arquitectura and the professional title of Arquitecto. The programme takes five to six years on paper and is taught in Spanish. Design studio work (taller) is central to the curriculum, and programmes end with a final degree project (proyecto de título).

SpainExchange lists 11 schools in Chile with architecture programmes: five in Santiago, three in Valparaíso, two in Concepción and one in Temuco. They include state universities, traditional private universities and newer private universities.

How the degree is organised

Chilean law reserves a group of professional titles for people who first hold a licenciado degree, and Arquitecto (with the degree of Licenciado en Arquitectura) is one of them. According to the Ministry of Education's Mi Futuro portal, such titles can therefore only be awarded by a university, not by a professional institute.

The length differs by university:

• 10 semesters at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM), the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC), the Universidad Autónoma de Chile and the Universidad Central de Chile
• 11 semesters at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC Chile), the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (Usach), the Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), where the licenciatura is reached after 8 semesters
• 12 semesters at the Universidad de Valparaíso (UV)

These are formal lengths. Mi Futuro points out that students in professional programmes with a licenciatura take 13.1 semesters on average to graduate from programmes with a formal length of 10 semesters. For architecture the UdeC publishes, citing the ministry's SIES data, a real duration of 17.8 semesters for its own 10-semester programme. It is sensible to plan for more time than the curriculum states.

Some schools link the degree to postgraduate study. The Usach, for example, lets students continue directly to its Máster Integrado en Diseño Arquitectónico and finish it in three more semesters.

Where architecture is taught

• Santiago: UC Chile, the Usach, the UDP (Casco Histórico campus) and the Universidad Central de Chile, which also teaches the degree in La Serena. The USM offers architecture at its San Joaquín campus as well as in Valparaíso.
• Valparaíso: the UV school is in Playa Ancha, the PUCV has its Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño, and the USM teaches the degree at its Casa Central campus.
• Concepción: the UdeC, and the Universidad del Bío-Bío, which lists Arquitectura among its regular programmes.
• Temuco: the Universidad Autónoma de Chile teaches architecture as a daytime programme at its Temuco and Talca campuses.

Admission and language

Applicants need a secondary school-leaving certificate (licencia de Enseñanza Media); a certificate from another country must be recognised by the Chilean Ministry of Education. Each university sets its own requirements. The universities of the Council of Rectors and several private universities use a common selection system based on the national entrance test, the PAES, combined with school grades. Places are limited: for 2027 the Usach offers 90 places in architecture.

Universities also have special admission routes, and UC Chile and the UV each list one for applicants who completed secondary school abroad. Teaching is in Spanish.

Foreign students apply for a temporary residence permit for students (Residencia Temporal). According to the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (page updated on 18 December 2025), the application is made online from abroad and requires, among other documents, a valid passport, a certificate of enrolment and proof of financial support.

Costs

The annual tuition fee (arancel) is set per university and programme. Published fees for the 2026 admission year are:

• UC Chile: CLP 9,180,000
• UDP: CLP 7,597,000, plus an enrolment fee of CLP 761,000
• Usach: CLP 5,958,000
• Universidad Autónoma de Chile: CLP 5,409,000, plus an enrolment fee of CLP 338,000

Because the real length is often longer than the formal one, the total cost depends on how many semesters a student needs.

Recognition and careers

Quality assurance is the task of the Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (CNA); institutional accreditation has been compulsory since 2020. Some schools also hold international accreditations. The UV states that its programme is accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) until 2029, and UC Chile lists accreditation by the US National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and RIBA. Whether a Chilean title allows practice in another country is decided by that country's authorities, so students who plan to work abroad should check there first.

The universities describe similar fields of work. The PUCV names building, planning, urbanism, teaching and research. The UDP mentions architecture and engineering offices, and the Universidad Central de Chile lists architecture offices, real estate and construction companies, public bodies and consultancies.
