About Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, in the West Midlands of England. It is a traditional market town surrounded by the River Severn, about 22 km from Wales, and the home town of Charles Darwin. Shropshire, the council area that includes the town, had around 323,600 inhabitants at the 2021 census, up 5.7% since 2011, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Shrewsbury is not a university city. Students come mainly for English courses in a small town where they hear English all day, and for boarding school. According to Severnvale Academy, the town is about 69 km from Birmingham, 98 km from Manchester and 240 km from London.
Studying in Shrewsbury
Our directory lists two English language schools and one independent school in and around Shrewsbury.
- Severnvale Academy, at 25 Claremont Hill, runs General English courses for adults with a maximum of six students per class (eight in July and August) and new starts every Monday. It prepares students for exams including IELTS and is an examining centre for TOLES and Linguaskill. It also offers business and legal English and a junior summer academy. The school states that it is the only accredited English language school in the town.
- Bright Owls Language School is also listed in our directory for English courses.
- Adcote School for Girls, in Little Ness near Shrewsbury, is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 7 to 18. It was founded on 18 January 1907 by Amy Gough and occupies a Tudor-style house by the architect Norman Shaw. International pupils can receive English as an Additional Language (EAL) support, and a short-term Immersion Programme lasts from half a term up to two terms.
Cost of living for students
According to the ONS, the average monthly private rent in Shropshire was £823 in August 2026, and £608 for a one-bedroom home. Most language students do not rent on their own:
- Homestay: at Severnvale Academy, staying with a host family includes breakfast and an evening meal on weekdays and full board at weekends. The school also arranges other accommodation.
- Boarding school fees: Adcote publishes its 2026-27 fees in downloadable booklets. All families pay a non-refundable £300 registration fee, and international students also pay a £150 application fee.
- Living costs for a visa: for a Student visa, courses outside London require proof of £1,171 a month (for up to nine months).
Getting around and daily life
Park and Ride buses run every 12 minutes from three car parks on the edge of town (since 28 June 2025). Single bus fares on participating services are capped at £3 until 31 December 2026, and the national cap falls to £2 from 1 January 2027.
Rail services are run by Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway. Trains link Shrewsbury with Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street, with Hereford and Cardiff on the Marches Line, and with Aberystwyth on the Cambrian Line. Birmingham Airport is about 50 minutes by road and Manchester Airport about 70 minutes, according to Severnvale Academy.
The right visa depends on the course. An English course of up to six months at an accredited institution can be taken as a visitor. A course of more than six and up to 11 months needs a Short-term study visa (£228). Pupils aged 4 to 17 at an independent school, such as a boarding school, need a Child Student visa (£558 from outside the UK).
