Studying in Tashkent

This directory lists three universities in Tashkent:

  • Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) opened in January 2002 with its first 120 students and has since grown to more than 5,000. All its programmes are taught in English and validated by the University of Westminster in London. Construction of its main building in the city centre began in 1911. Besides bachelor's degrees in business, economics, finance, law, international relations and computer science, it offers a foundation year, master's programmes and an MBA.
  • University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) was established on 23 September 1992 and operates under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its programmes cover international relations, international law, political science, economics and management.
  • National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek (NUUz) has 13 faculties, about 34,000 students, 56 fields of study and 1,230 professors and teachers, according to the university. Its main building is on University Street in the Almazor district.

Admission and visa

Each university runs its own admissions. At UWED, foreign applicants register online, and the 2026 application window ran from 1 June to 10 August 2026. Diplomas must be legalised or apostilled; for bachelor's applicants English is an advantage, while master's applicants need a valid language certificate.

Most foreigners need a visa, except citizens of the 76 countries with a visa-free regime. Visas are issued by Uzbek embassies and consulates once the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed them, and WIUT's international office helps admitted students with the process. All foreigners must register with the local authorities immediately on arrival; registration for up to one year costs about USD 240, according to WIUT.

Cost of living for students

Uzbekistan's currency is the sum (UZS). For 2026-27, WIUT charges international students 54,600,000 UZS a year for an undergraduate course (about USD 4,484 at the April 2026 exchange rate) and 75,870,000 UZS for most master's courses. A room in WIUT's halls of residence costs 800,000 UZS a month in 2025-26. Places are limited to students from outside Tashkent and demand is high, so apply early. UWED has its own student hostel with two buildings and 800 places.

Getting around and daily life

The climate is continental, with large differences between seasons. According to WIUT, winter temperatures usually range from −5 °C to +5 °C, and summer temperatures reach 36 °C to 42 °C. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant seasons. Visas can be issued on arrival at Tashkent International Airport only in limited cases, for example when there is no Uzbek embassy or consulate in the country you fly from.
