Carleton College is a liberal arts college in Northfield, a college town in southern Minnesota, United States, about 40 miles from Minneapolis and St. Paul. It teaches only undergraduates, offering broad learning in the arts, humanities, mathematics and the natural and social sciences, with more than 50 majors and minors. Every course is taught by a professor rather than a teaching assistant, and the Office of Off-Campus Studies has organised study away from Northfield for 50 years.
About 10% of students are international, from 51 countries, and the Office of International Student Life supports them. Carleton meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for every student, but funding for international students is limited, so international applicants who need aid must request it when they apply.
Housing is guaranteed for all four years and 96% of students live on campus, next to the 800-acre Cowling Arboretum. Students can join around 200 student organisations.

Documents not issued in English need an English translation, which applicants may not do themselves. Interviews are optional; InitialView or Vericant interviews can be sent.
Early Decision is binding and only a few international scholarship applicants are admitted at that stage; most international scholarships are awarded in Regular Decision.
Applicants who do not speak English at home and have not been taught in English for the last four years should submit the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test. According to Carleton, students with these scores are well prepared for its courses:
- TOEFL iBT: 5.5 or above (100 or above for tests before 2026)
- IELTS: 7.0 or above
- Duolingo English Test: 130 or above
Carleton meets 100% of demonstrated need for every student, with no income caps. International students apply for aid with the free International Student Application for Financial Assistance or the CSS Profile and are then automatically considered for Starr Foundation Grants (students from Asia), Kellogg Scholarships and the Underbrink Fund for Global Initiatives. Funding for international students is limited, and aid requests are not considered after admission. Nearly four in five students work a campus job.
Carleton guarantees housing for all four years, and 96-98% of students live in campus housing. The campus borders the 800-acre Cowling Arboretum, a few steps from the residence halls.
